Tuticorin: A two-day University Grants Commission sponsored State-level seminar on Swadeshism – its role and impact on national and working class movements in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu commenced at V.O. Chidambaram College here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the programme, K.A. Manikumar, Director, Directorate of Distance Education, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, said that the efforts of V.O. Chidambaram Pillai and his role in the freedom movement were ignored.

He remarked how the Swadeshi Movement marked the end of a moderate approach.

A. Francis, Principal and organising secretary, who welcomed the gathering, explained how the residents of Tuticorin involved themselves in the Swadeshi Movement.

A.P.C.V. Chockalingam, secretary, stressed the relevance of the Swadeshi spirit in the present day scenario.

T. Stalin Gunasekaran, president, Makkal Sindhanai Peravai, Erode, traced the evolutionary stages of the freedom movement.

Faculty members of History, N. Jeyakumar, R. Soundararajan and staff and students from various colleges in Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari attended the programme.
