CHENNAI: The Republic Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and fervour by government departments, educational institutions and non-governmental organisations in the city on Tuesday.
Mayor M. Subramanian unfurled the national flag at the Ripon Building and presented certificates of appreciation to 17 officials of Chennai Corporation, including zonal officer C. Boominathan for energy efficiency and Communicable Diseases Hospital Director Lakshmi for treating hundreds of patients afflicted with swine flu and chikungunya.
He also distributed welfare assistance totalling Rs.3.20 lakh to 23 beneficiaries under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy maternity assistance scheme and Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar marriage assistance scheme.
At the Chennai Collectorate, freedom-fighters were honoured. Collector V. Shobana distributed welfare assistance of Rs.10.53 lakh to 214 persons, including senior citizens, physically challenged and members of SHGs. Municipal Administration and Water Supply Secretary Niranjan Mardi, who is also Chairman of Chennai Metrowater, hoisted the tricolour at a function held at Metrowater headquarters in Chintadripet. He gave away Kisan Vikas certificates to 10 employees for their flawless service for 25 years.
At the Republic Day celebrations at the Metropolitan Transport Corporation headquarters, Transport Secretary Atulya Misra distributed prizes to MTC staff in appreciation of their work. Conductor Srikumar who prevented an accident when the driver of the bus lost conscious near Aminjikarai recently was honoured for his presence of mind.
While 69 drivers were given prizes for fuel conservation, 25 conductors were rewarded for generating a large amount of revenue in three months. The Ennore, Tiruvottiyur and T.Nagar depots were presented awards for best performance.
In Kancheepuram, Collector Santosh K.Misra unfurled the national flag at the District Sports Stadium. He took the guard of honour presented by the Kancheepuram Police District contingent.
