MADURAI: Unidentified burglars escaped with 45 sovereigns of gold ornaments from a locked house in the city on Sunday.

Police said that M. Jayaraman, a TNEB official at Arasaradi, residing at S.E.V. Nagar, Natham Road, had in a complaint lodged that the gold jewelleries were missing from his house.

He, along with his family members, had locked his and gone to a temple in a neighbouring district in the morning to offer prayers at a temple there. On their return in the evening, they found the valuables missing.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that as a relative of Mr. Jayaraman was getting married next month, they had purchased jewels and kept them in the almirah. The family members were shocked to see the almirah broken open and their belongings scattered all over the room.
