Collector assures farmers of conveying their demand
THANJAVUR: Farmers of Thanjavur district appealed to Collector M. S. Shanmugham to recommend to the Government to supply water from Mettur Dam till February 15 to save crops in tailend areas.
The dam water supply was closed on January 28. The farmers said that the crops in tailend areas needed a little more wetting.
The Collector assured the farmers that he would convey the demand. At the same time, he said, farmers should consider the reality. Water level at Mettur dam stood at 62.22 ft. The storage was only 26 tmc ft. The inflow into the dam was 433 cusecs. On this day last year, it stood at 94 ft.
The Collector said that samba and thaladi crops were cultivated on 1,30,431 hectares and harvest has been completed on 37,000 hectares. Maximum yield of 3,600 kg per hectare has been recorded and the average yield was only 2,450 kg per hectare.
Summer paddy crop has been transplanted on 4,700 hectares till Friday. Farmers could take up pulses cultivation. Agriculture extension centres are supplying three varieties of black gram seeds, ie., ADT3, ADT5 and Vamban, at Rs. 12 subsidy per kilo. Seeds of cotton varieties MCU7 and SVPR3 are available at Rs. 20 subsidy per kg. There is a stock of 3,500 tonnes of gingelly seeds in extension centres.
