MADURAI: The district administration has come forward to meet the demands of Dalits in Uthapuram village. They were facing several problems, including the inability to use the public pathway created after partial demolition of the “untouchability wall” by the government.

Frequent representations at various levels and protests by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the All India Democratic Women Association made the district administration to act swiftly and remove the temporary barricades.

The move, executed on Wednesday, followed the Madras High Court Bench order for an enquiry by a two-member committee into alleged police excesses at Uthapuram. CPI (M) leaders thanked Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for acting on the issue.
