A total of 9,856 priceless goats have been given to the poor in the district during the last two years not only to ensure sustainable income generation activities but also to improve the rural economy and prevent migration of labour to urban areas from villages, said Finance Minister O. Paneerselvam.
He was inaugurating a special veterinary camp meant for priceless goats and cows at Veerapandi near here on Saturday.
Six hundred and fourteen lambs have been born so far and 1,259 ewes were pregnant. Of these, de-worming was done to almost all goats. A total of 112 special veterinary camps were held and 9,792 beneficiaries were benefited. The district administration has plans to conduct 112 camps this year also. Goats and cows will offer additional income to poor farmers and farm labourers, he said and appealed to them not to sell these goats .
The State government has not abandoned farmers after distributing goats and cattle but has been assisting and encouraging farmers to maintain them, he added. The government has also been distributing financial assistance for setting up of cattle shed and producing cattle feed. . The farmers were being encouraged to produce cattle feed and were also tutored to process and store them in safe place to use it during dry season. Technical expertise was also imparted to them in this connection, he added.
Veterinary officials have been conducting special medical camps to detect diseases at early stage . Early detection will ensure speedy recovery and prevent spreading of disease to other animals. Feeding quality feed will certainly increase milk yield, he pointed out.
All eligible beneficiaries will get free mixies, grinders and fans within the stipulated time, he assured.
The Minister also distributed Rs. 2,000 each to 55 beneficiaries for setting up cattle sheds. Prizes were given to best three cattle farmers.
Collector K.S. Palanisamy said that veterinary camps will be conducted in prominent place for beneficiaries to bring their goats or cattle for check up. Date, time and venue will be intimated to the beneficiaries periodically, he added.
