KRISHNAGIRI: Collector V.K. Shanmugam has ordered demolition of encroachments on the drinking water pipeline in a pond in Uthangarai town panchayat.
Residents of Kalaignar Nagar (Ward No. 7) thronged the Collectorate on Monday to submit a petition to the Collector urging him to remove the encroachers on the drinking water pipeline. As soon as he received petitions from the residents, the Collector ordered the Uthangarai Tahsildhar to evict the encroachers from thatched huts.
More than 100 members of Roja Mahalir Sangam, Malargal Mahalir Sangam, Kamatchi Amman Mahalir Sangam and Pookal Mahalir Sangam who gathered at the Collectorate alleged that a local bigwig with political support constructed a pucca RC building on the water pipeline in the pond that leads to Kalaignar Nagar.
The pipeline had burst after which the encroachment came to notice of the local people.
They complained that they did not get drinking water through pipes because of the encroachments.
The petitioners said that about 250 to 300 families were living in Kalaignar Nagar.
They were drawing drinking water from the 15 street taps provided by the panchayat. When contacted the Tahsildhar, V. Mukundan, told ‘The Hindu’ that the main encroacher had been evicted from the site with the help of revenue officials. Another 15 to 20 thatched huts will also be demolished after serving eviction notice in the next fortnight.
He added that the Revenue Department would put up a warning board at the site to safeguard the pond from future encroachments.
