Student commits suicide
A 20-year-old engineering student allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the second floor of a women’s hostel in an engineering college in Chinna Kolambakkam near Madurantakam, on Monday night.
The victim, Vaitheeswari of Vazhavachanur, Tiruvannamalai district, was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to head injuries on Tuesday, police said. Inquiries by Pattalam police revealed that Vaitheeswari reportedly resorted to the extreme step after lecturers questioned her ‘irregular attendance record’.
Body found in well
The body of a 19-year-old woman was found in an irrigation well near Iyyanarkoil, Mettupalayam near Manampathy, on Tuesday morning.
The victim was identified by police as Jayalakshmi. She had married Velmurugan of Iyyanarkoil seven months ago. The case has now been referred to the Revenue Divisional Officer, police added.
A 32-year-old man was found murdered in his home in Venkateswara Nagar, Anakaputhur on Tuesday.
Police said the victim, Loganathan, was a quality control officer in a software company. His wife, Nithyashree, had left home for her native village some days ago. On Tuesday morning, Nithyashree called her husband on his mobile phone several times. When he did not answer, she called his neighbours.
The neighbours found their flat bolted from the inside and called the police, who arrived and broke open the door. Loganathan’s body was found inside, cut into pieces. Further investigations are on.
Ganja seized, five arrested
Egmore police arrested five persons including two women on charges of peddling drugs and seized ganja weighing 2.5 kgs.
Police said, following a tip-off on Monday night, a team tailed Ebenezer (20) and Muthu (20), both from Vyasaradi and rounded them in Pudupet when they met their accomplices Joseph (30), Kala (40) and Shanti (45), all from Triplicane.
The youth were carrying 1.25 kg of ganja and were handing it over to the trio who were already in possession of another 1.25 kg of the contraband, police added.
