Chennai District Development Plan unveiled
CHENNAI: Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will send a proposal to the State government on developing a larger regional plan covering areas outside the Chennai Metropolitan Area, its Member Secretary Vikram Kapur said here on Thursday.
Such a planning, he said, would help bring about regulated development and proper infrastructure due to appropriate zoning. Mr.Kapur was speaking at a conference on ‘Chennai@ 75’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
On the areas to be covered under the larger plan, he said “while Chennai suburbs would be covered, we are not clear as to which areas the government would want us to plan for.” The CMDA had already prepared a plan for the area south of Chennai, he said, adding that the larger regional plan would need more resources and manpower.
Mr. Kapur also announced that a comprehensive transport and traffic survey being conducted by the CMDA along with the World Bank would be ready in a couple of months.
Addressing the gathering, CII Chennai Zone Chairman G. R. K. Reddy said that from 1994 to 2007 the city’s GDP grew at 6.5 per cent while the State’s GDP grew at 6.1 per cent. The Chennai Metropolitan Area’s contribution to the State GDP was 40 per cent. There were 34,520 factories and 53,315 SSI units. He said that the city accounted for 30 per cent of the country’s auto industry, 15 per cent of India’s software exports and 50 per cent of India’s leather exports.
On the occasion, CII unveiled the Chennai District Development Plan focussing on key areas such as business and infrastructure, education and skill development, governance and administration, healthcare and research and development.
The document recommended the need for developing mass housing projects; assisting local bodies to plan and project management; improving connectivity and roads; better healthcare for slum-dwellers and blue collar workers.
L&T ECC Ltd Whole Time Director K. V. Rangaswamy, Chairman of CII Tamil Nadu Manikam Ramaswami, Vice Chairperson of CII Chennai Zone Gayathri Sriram and ICRA Management Consultancy Services Managing Director Raghuttama Rao participated.
