PUDUKOTTAI: National Service Scheme (NSS) concept was introduced in polytechnic colleges under the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) in 1983-84. In the last quarter century, the NSS concept has caught the imagination of the students.
At present, 170 polytechnic colleges all over the State have NSS units with a membership of over 38,500.
To celebrate the silver jubilee of NSS in DOTE, a workshop on ‘soft skills development of NSS volunteers’ was organised by the Sudharsan Polytechnic College, Sathiyamangalam, Pudukottai district recently for the benefit of the NSS volunteers.
Regional Deputy Director of Employment, Tiruchi, P. Suresh Kumar in his inaugural address underlined the importance of developing soft skills for of the youths.
In the first technical session, R. Sudha Ranjani, advocate, laid emphasis on developing communication skill.
Krishnaprasad from Precision Informatic Private Limited, Chennai, during the next session explained the importance of preparation of a resume and how to do that.
He also spoke on the techniques involved in facing the interview without any fear.
Time management is nothing but self-management and this has to be nurtured in the young age itself.
This point was driven home by Pattabiraman, also from Precision.
MNSK Engineering College Training and Placement Officer A. B. Gurumoorthy presented a live demonstration of a typical group discussion and it evoked a good response from the packed audience.
N. Manimegalai, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University, was the chief guest at the valediction.
She stressed that women should take part in such workshops to improve their status in education.
G. U. K. Narayanan, Chief Executive Officer, Sudharsan Group of Educational Institutions, said that such workshops would be a regular feature.
