Kumbabishekam of Mahaganapathy Temple at Ganapathy Agraharam village near here was held on Friday. Hundreds of devotees from across central districts witnessed the event.
Holy water was poured on the kalasam of the temple at 9.45 a.m.
Located at Papanasam taluk on Kumbakonam-Thiruvaiyaaru road, 14 kms from Kumbakonam and six kms from Thiruvaiyaaru, Ganapathy Agrahram derives its name from the Mahaganapathy who blesses people from there.
It is said that the idol of the Lord here was installed by Saint Agasithiyar and Gautama rishi had performed pujas. Flanked on southern side by Cauvery river and on the northern side by Kollidam river, the place offers an ideal location for the temple.
People in this village celebrate Vinayaka Chathurthi festival together at the temple instead of celebrating it individually in houses. Brahmotsavam is held during Vinayaka Chathurthi festival. Kumbabishekam was performed last in June 23, 1995.
Mahabishekam was performed in the evening and the Lord was taken in a procession later.
K. Baskaran, Collector, C. Suresh Kumar, District Revenue Officer and Savithiri Gopal, chairperson of Thanjavur Municipality, participated in the event.
