NAGAPATTINAM: Farmers in the Cauvery delta region have welcomed the announcement made in the Tamil Nadu budget on waiver of interest for farmers who repay their loans within the due to the co-operative banks and also remission of kist in 12 districts. Arupathy Kalyanam, general secretary of the Federation of farmers associations in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts said the government should take steps to waive the interest on farm loans obtained from the nationalised and other commercial banks and there should be no discrimination between co-operative banks and nationalised banks. He pointed out that commercial banks provide lion’s share of farm loans.
