KANCHEEPURAM: Higher Education Minister K.Ponmudy on Sunday highlighted the need to popularise games that also provide good physical exercise to the younger generation.

Declaring open a national-level Inter-University Ball Badminton Tournament for Men, organised by Madras University at Sri Santhoshi Arts and Science College (SSASC) at Madurantakam in Kancheepuram, the Higher Education Minister said several retired persons used to play ball badminton since it served the dual purpose of playing a game and doing physical exercise.

“In our schooldays, base ball and ball badminton remained popular games. Nowadays, cricket has assumed so much popularity that even rural youth play the game on barren agriculture lands,” he said. Games such as ball badminton did not involve much expenditure while lot more of money had to be spent to play cricket or lawn tennis, he added. Commending the Santhoshi Group of Institutions for setting up an arts and science college in the rural area, Mr.Ponmudy said the present DMK government’s decision to scrap entrance examinations had resulted in more number of students from the rural areas taking up engineering and medical courses.

Addressing the gathering, Rajya Sabha MP and Chairman of SSASC Jayanthi Natarajan said sports played a vital role in personality development in youth. Students from 65 Universities from all over the country are taking part in the tournament, which would conclude on February 20.

Labour Welfare Minister T.M.Anbarasan, Madurantakam MLA and Secretary, SSASC, K.Gayathri, Madras University Registrar M.Ranganathan, Physical Education Director, Madras University, V.Mahadevan, participated in the inaugural function.
