Notice to be issued to property owners

Barriers in any form inside the elephant corridor in the Sigur plateau adjoining the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) will be viewed very seriously by the government, said S.Ramasubramaniam, District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris North, here on Thursday.

He told The Hindu that in keeping with an order of the government steps had been initiated to remove all kinds of fences.

Pointing out that on Friday notices would be issued to property owners who had erected different types of fences, he said that 55 such property had been identified.

They were resorts and farm houses.

HC order

Following an order of the Madras High Court early this year, the department had swung into action and removed solar powered fences put up by land and building owners inside the corridor.

Barbed wire

It had led to the erection of barbed wire and chain link fences.

Since the court had observed categorically that there should not be any kind of barriers inside the corridor, the department was issuing the notice asking the owners to remove the fences within a week.

If the fences remained even after the end of the deadline, the department itself would remove them.
