Will function at temporary locations
Tirupur: Minister for Highways M.P.Saminathan inaugurated the newly-allocated Primary Health Centres (PHCs) of the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Koduvai under Tirupur revenue division and at Kundadam under Dharapuram revenue division, on Friday.
Official sources told The Hindu that both the PHCs would function from makeshift locations for the time being till new edifices were constructed at a total cost of Rs. 42 lakh earmarked under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scheme.
While the Koduvai PHC had been located at the health sub-centre in the locality, Kundadam PHC was based at the Community Hall in that town.
Staff at Koduvai PHC include two medical officers, three nurses, a pharmacist and a sanitary worker whereas the Kundadam PHC will have two medical officers, two nurses, a pharmacist and a sanitary worker.
Deputy Director of Health V.Vijayalakshmi told The Hindu the new building for the PHCs would be constructed at a total cost of Rs. 42 lakh (ie. Rs 21 lakh each).
With the establishment of Koduvai PHC, the total number of PHCs in Tirupur Health Unit District (HUD) had gone up to 31. Similarly, the introduction of PHC at Kundadam took the total number of such centres in Dharapuram Health Unit District (HUD) to 33.
S. Senthil Kumar, Deputy Director, Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, said that three more PHCs would be inaugurated in Dharapuram HUD before the end of the month.
