CHENNAI: “All of us think we have a problem. We complain how we are fat or thin, or fair or dark. But there is a lesson for us all to learn these from persons with disabilities.” This was music director A.R. Rahman addressing presspersons after meeting the 12 persons with disabilities short-listed for the CavinKare Ability Award.
Deeply touched by their efforts to overcome challenges posed by disability, Mr. Rahman, a member of the jury, said that their stories had shown how persons born with disability could turn achievers with consistent effort. Of the 200 nominations received for the award, 12 were short-listed and seven will finally win various awards. The names of the winners would be announced at a gala event in early March, said Janaki Pillai, Director (operations) of the Ability Foundation. The other prominent jury members also shared their thoughts on the nominees. Director Radha Mohan, whose film Mozhi portrayed the emotional journey of a hearing and speech impaired girl Archana, said he was inspired by the work done by Ability Foundation and that he had learnt sign language for making the movie from here.
N.Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, said it was a humbling experience for him to meet the nominees short-listed for the award.
