A 53-year old woman pillion rider died in a road accident after a lorry hit the two wheeler she was travelling on near Purasaiwalkam on Friday evening. She is the wife of A. Maria Irudayam, India's only carrom player to receive the Arjuna award.

According to police, Phelomina (53), the deceased was riding pillion and her husband Mr. Maria Irudayam was riding the bike. They couple reside at Periamet and were headed towards Purasaiwalkam. When they reached the Thana Street junction, a corporation lorry hit the right rear side of the bike.

She fell down and the lorry ran over her. Phelomina died on the spot.
