CHENNAI: The Vel Tech Dr. RR & Dr. SR Technical University has proposed to award Mahatma Gandhi National Scholarships worth Rs.5 crore to students, its Vice-Chancellor Rangarajan Mahalakshmi K. announced here on Sunday.
As per the scholarship scheme, the top three applicants from each State in India will receive a 100 per cent tuition fee waiver, besides being entitled to free boarding and hostel facilities for four years.
In addition to this, the top 100 students securing admission to the university, with a minimum 90 per cent aggregate in mathematics, physics and chemistry in the Class XII board examinations, would be eligible for a 50 per cent concession on tuition fees.
Interested students could download the application form from the university’s website and apply for the course of their choice before April 20. Candidates need to forward a certified copy of their mark sheet after the Class XII examination results are declared. More details are available at www.vel-tech.org.
Following this announcement, senior academicians and corporates offered felicitations to the university’s founder and chancellor Vel. R. Rangarajan. Mannar Jawahar, vice-chancellor, Anna University said the university had progressed remarkably, in the short period from the time it acquired university status. “The Vel Tech university not only has good infrastructure, but also has trained and competent faculty. Moreover, the university is actively collaborating with institutions abroad, as well as the industry. This shows how much they value academic and collaborative industrial research,” he said.
S. Ramachandran, vice-chancellor, University of Madras, stressed the need for constantly updating, re-structuring and re-engineering the education system. Pointing to the rapid expansion in higher education in the country, he said much of it was quantitative growth. “We have often been criticised for not being able to produce job-ready graduates…This is where private institutions play a key role. In that respect, Vel Tech University has made the right beginning,” he added. Senior executives from leading organisations commended Vel Tech University’s initiatives.
