CHENNAI: A large number of visually impaired persons were arrested for resorting to a road blockade in Chepauk on Wednesday.

Police said that the agitators were demanding proper investigation in the sudden death of a girl at Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School for the Blind in Tiruchi on February 28. Earlier, they took out a procession from Munroe Statue to Chepauk. Traffic was disrupted on Wallajah Road for more than an hour.

In a release, National Federation of the Blind general secretary M. Sagadevan alleged that five visually challenged persons were injured when police assaulted them. However, Commissioner of Police K. Radhakrishnan said that there was no such attack.

“We had given instructions to the police to handle the agitators with care…Besides providing lunch, we dropped them at their respective places in our vehicles,” he said.
