ERODE: Members of the Tamil Nadu Kal Iyakkam, a movement for toddy tapping, have vowed to defeat Tamil Nadu Congress party president K.V. Thankgabalu.
Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday, Iyakkam’s leader C. Nallasami said the members would work to defeat Mr. Thankgabalu, who opposed their demand for tapping toddy and staged a fast on the very day they began their mass toddy tapping movement.
Mr. Nallasami said that the police had registered about 200 cases against persons who indulged in toddy tapping and added that the movement would fight the case free-of-cost on behalf of the arrested.
He also said that if the Government did not grant permission legalising toddy tapping, the movement’s members would stage a demonstration in front of liquor manufacturing companies as well as police stations.
Mr. Nallasami argued that toddy tapping helped people in rural areas earn more, as a person with a tree earned about Rs. 2,000 a day and the one climbing around Rs. 500.
He urged the Government to permit toddy tapping.
