NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal District Legal Services Authority conducted awareness camps on National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in Keerambur and Konur villages recently.

On instructions from Principal District Judge S. Kalavathi, the Authority organised the camps to raise the level of awareness among people about the scheme and encourage them to register for work under it.

Participating in the camp held at Keerambur, Sub-Judge and Secretary of the Authority, K. Muralisankar, said that the scheme was aimed at enhancing the livelihood security of households in rural areas, by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in each financial year to every household.

The scheme also aims to minimise migration of people from rural areas to urban parts in search of jobs and empower rural poor.

The government provides a number of benefits for the workers engaged under the scheme.

Drinking water provisions, First Aid and other facilities would be provided at the work places. If workers sustained injuries during the work, they would be provided treatment free of cost.

Mr. Muralisankar also inspected various works being carried out under NREGS.
