SALEM: The damaged tiles on the steps leading to the underpass in Salem Railway Junction pose danger to the passengers.

The underpass in the railway junction is the only way to access platforms 1, 2 and 3. But a number of tiles on the steps leading to the underpass remain broken, causing serious concern among thousands of passengers who access the railway junction every day.

A large number of people from different places including Erode, Mettur, Attur and Dharmapuri come to Salem for work.

Merchants from Coimbatore, Erode and Vilupuram districts also visit Salem regularly for carrying out their activities.

A few passengers tripped over the broken tiles and fell down, sustaining injuries. Passengers had to take extra caution to avoid the sharp edges of the broken tiles.

Officials, who earlier claimed that the Railway spent huge amount for improving passenger amenities in the station, continue to overlook the problem.

Commuters say that they have taken up this issue to the notice of senior officials in the railway station on several occasions.

“But no fruitful measures have been taken up to sort out the problem so far,” they claim.
