Coimbatore: Sudden appearance of Tata’s Nano car on city roads on Wednesday came as a pleasant surprise to the citizens here.

Set to become ‘people’s car,’ its arrival before the official launch – slated for March 23 in Mumbai – made heads turn. Even those travelling by luxury cars stopped a while to have a glimpse of the much talked-about vehicle.

Accompanied by enthusiastic two-wheelers it had a test drive on Tiruchi Road majestically.

Tata Motors dealer here, however, said that the car was yet to reach showroom. The test drive was done by Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives Ltd (JAL).

J. Anand, Managing Director of JAL, said: “It is extremely easy to drive.” Even tall persons can sit comfortably in the car.

An ace car rallyist, Mr. Anand said Nano will re-write the rules of entry level cars with a huge price difference.

People would be waiting to know how good the car is for the money paid on it, he said pointing that a consumer would be shelling out only Rs. 1 lakh plus for it.

Nano accelerates well and without any rattling noise.

He said when his employees go for testing Nano, they were flooded with enquiries on how, when and where to book the car. The car is easily manoeuvrable as it could turn in a small radius.

Asked for the impact of Nano on the entire auto and auto component industry (Coimbatore is home to many big and small auto component makers), Mr. Anand said it would help revive the auto market.

The car will be on display at Tata Motors dealers from the first week of April. Bookings will commence from the second week of April.

The booking process and other details will be announced on March 23, according to Tata Motors web site.
