CHENNAI: Finance Minister C. Ponniayan on Friday urged the Centre to "expeditiously accord environmental clearance" to the desalination plant project, proposed to be set up to augment water supply in the city.

"This Government is committed to completing the 100 million litres per day desalination project," he told the Assembly during his budget speech here.

The Government has sanctioned Rs. 1,328 crores for improvement of the road network in the city and adjoining areas. "This will include improvements to 273 km of roads and construction of 11 bridges," he said.

This was part of the plan to improve infrastructure in the city.

Grant to Madras varsity

The Government will provide Rs. 5 crore grant to the Madras University, which is celebrating 150 years, to set up a new Centre for Nano Sciences, he said.
