RK Mission English course
CHENNAI: Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, T. Nagar will commence the sixth batch of its spoken English course (basic, intermediate and advanced levels - for three months) for college students, employees and job seekers on January 23. NSS units inaugurated
The NSS units of Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science for Women inaugurated the Red Ribbon Club last month. The programme focussed on the use of knowledge attained from education and on honesty and hard work.
Church silver jubilee
The Malabar Independent Syrian St. George Church in Otteri will celebrate its silver jubilee on Saturday and Sunday. The celebrations start with the mass followed by the melam from Kerala. On the second day, there will be a mass presided over by three priests headed by the Bishop H.G. Cyril Mar Bassaliose. At the end of the mass, there will be a commemoration meeting presided over by the Bishop, with the introductory message from Kurivila M. George, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax.
Free eye camp
The Singhvi Charitable Trust conducted a free-eye and dental camp at Naidavoyal, Tiruvallur district. At the camp, 435 persons were screened for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataract, vision and dental problems, and 187 will get free spectacles. Free medicines were given to 100 for eye-related problems. Fortyseven patients were referred to Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre and Research Institute at Porur for surgery.
In another camp held by the Trust at Singhvi Diagnostic Centre, Triplicane, 164 people were diagnosed for eye-related problems, and 127 free spectacles were given.
Lions to give away dhotis, sarees
Lions Clubs International District 324 A-1, will conduct Pongal celebrations by distributing free dhotis and sarees and organising free medical check-up for farmers at the TMG Arts and Science College, Manimangalam, Tambaram.
Some 4,500 students and 300 members of Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School organised an awareness campaign for a smokeless bhogi on January 12.
The rally was flagged off by N. Vijayan, principal of the school. Students carried placards on the need for a clean and safer environment in Selaiyur.
A 35-year-old man was found murdered at Vengaivaasal near Tambaram on Wednesday. Pallikaranai police said passers-by noticed the body in a pool of blood and informed them. The body of the victim, who is yet to be identified, has been sent for post mortem.
