CHENNAI: The Income Tax department is making serious efforts to improve its functioning but it will take some time, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai, Santhosh Datta, said here on Monday.

He was inaugurating the B.B. Naidu study circle meeting for 2006 and speaking on "How to make the tax administration taxpayer friendly," under the auspices of the Society of Auditors.

We are not the old demons we were known as. Today, you can walk into the department and, to some extent, expect your problems to be taken care of," said Mr. Datta. Refunds were a big challenge while records was a "messy area" the department wanted to look into.
