Free eye camp
CHENNAI: Over 150 persons were screened for eye problems at a free camp organised by Hindu Mission Hospital at Maha Sakthi Sri Gangai Amman temple in East Tambaram on Wednesday. Of them 30 were referred for free surgery.
The Lions Club International (district 324 - A1) collected more than 50 units of blood at a camp organised at Thakkar Baba Vidyalaya campus on Venkat Narayana Road in T.Nagar recently.
SMILE (Selfless Movement Improving Life Everywhere), a city-based voluntary organisation, conducted a medical camp, cleaned up a temple and volunteered in traffic regulation over the past week. More than 225 persons were screened at the medical camp in Thiruvottiyur. Over 65 persons donated blood at the camp organised at Guntur Subbiah Pillai School in T.Nagar. More than 180 volunteers of SMILE helped out the TTD Information Centre in T. Nagar, Thiruneermalai Perumal Temple and the Kesava Perumal Temple in Mylapore on Vaikunta Ekadesi day this Tuesday.
About 200 cadets of the Road Safety Patrol unit of P.S. Higher Secondary School in Mylapore took out a cycle rally recently to spread the message of road safety. They asked the two-wheeler riders to wear helmets and distributed pamphlets on road safety.
Assistance to special children
Former MLA Ugamchand Lodha distributed mobility aids to the special children of Bala Vihar and Share and Care Children's home recently. Justice S.K. Krishnan, judge, Madurai High Court Bench, presided over the function. The event was organised by Bhagwan Mahaveer Ahimsa Prachar Sangh.
Lodge murder breakthrough
A 51-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on charges of murdering a woman at a lodge in Triplicane. Triplicane police said that K. Nataraj, the accused, had booked into the lodge with a 35-year-old woman on New Year's eve. On January 1, the woman was found dead, and Nataraj was missing.
The address provided by the couple proved to be fake, but investigators were able to identify the woman as Neelavathy, a resident of Peravurani.
Police said Nataraj had confessed to bringing Neelavathy to Chennai and killing her after she demanded that they live together. Nataraj has also been charged with murdering Radha (35) in November last by adding poison to a drink.
