CHENNAI: The Chancellor of the Dr. MGR Deemed University at Maduravoyal surrendered before the Poonamallee court near here on Wednesday afternoon.

The Madras High Court had granted anticipatory bail to Mr. Shanmugam in two cases, as also his family members, on the condition that they could be released on bail in the event of arrest or on surrendering before a court on executing a bond for Rs. 5,000 and furnishing two sureties for a like sum each.

In one case, the college authorities have been charged with obstructing public servants from rescuing hostel students trapped inside the buildings when the campus was inundated during the recent rain. The case was registered by the Maduravoyal police on a complaint given by the local Village Administrative Officer.

The other case, in which Mr. Shanmugam was granted anticipatory bail, relates to a complaint lodged by a former student, Tajmul Ahmed, who alleged that he was threatened with dire consequences when he demanded refund of his course fees in 2003-04.

Based on the conditions, the Poonamallee court granted him bail, according to official sources.
