CHENNAI: The Department of Posts will release a commemorative postage stamp on Gemini Ganesan in the denomination of Rs.5 on Saturday.

Dayanidhi Maran, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, will release the stamp, a Postal Department press release said.

Gemini Ganesan was born on November 17, 1920, in Pudukottai. Completing his studies at Ramakrishna Home, Chennai, and Maharaja College, Pudukottai, he graduated from Madras Christian College, Tambaram, and became a lecturer there.

His film career began with Miss Malini in 1947. Hit films such as Penn, Kanavane Kankanda Deivam, and Missiamma gave him a star status, the release said.

He has acted in lead roles in over 200 films in all the southern languages and Hindi.

He was honoured with several awards and titles, including the Padmashree, Nadippu Chelvam and Nadigar Mannan.

Stamps, first day covers and information brochures will be available at all philatelic bureaux and philatelic counters, the press release added.
