Protesting against non-implementation of Avinashi - Athikadavu water scheme
ERODE: The Erode district unit of Kongu Peravai has decided to boycott the Assembly poll in the five constituencies in the district.
The meeting of the planning committee of the Peravai was held at Nambiyur on Sunday in which the organiser, Kumara Ravikumar, presided.
The meeting said the Avinashi - Athikadavu water scheme was a major scheme for the Assembly segments of Bhavanisagar, Tirupur, Perundurai, Gobichettipalayam and part of Mettupalayam.
It had been pending for the past 25 years.
The meeting said that during her election campaign in 2001, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, had assured that she would implement the scheme and after assuming office, a survey was conducted and the Government announced that Rs. 280 crores was needed for the scheme.
The Government had assured that it would implement the scheme.
But till date, no fund was allotted and no preliminary works were undertaken for the scheme.
If the scheme was implemented, water can be stored in 400-odd ponds and 45 tanks in 10 Panchayat Unions would get water, which can be used for irrigation and drinking water purposes.
The meeting said the surplus water from the Bhavanisagar reservoir may be diverted via Annur, Avinashi, Tirupur, Kunnathur, Perundutrai and Chennimalai and used as drinking water in the dry tracts.
The meeting threatened that if the Chief Minister failed to sanction funds immediately, the Peravai members and their family members in Bhavanisagar, Tirupur, Gobichettipalayam, Avinashi and Perundurai constituencies would boycott the ensuing Assembly election.
