The finals of VJ Factor 2 will be telecast on February 18

CHENNAI: The gruelling final round of Southern Spice Music's (SS Music) VJ Factor 2 was illuminating. It made you appreciate the old hands Craig, Cary, Shyam, Paloma and Shriya.

But as the cliche goes, the old must give way to the new. And so, four new faces were chosen - Pooja Ramachandran, Anuj Gurwara, Purnima Maudgil and Gibran (from Chennai).

After an eventful final that saw some funny moments, lots of lewdness, glimpses of hostility and plenty of exhibitionary affection onstage, the judges decided that they couldn't go with the original plan of three VJs, as the choice from the last four was too difficult. Ms 16-going-on-17 Purnima came as a surprise as the contest rules stated that participants had to be from 18-28 years of age. But then, this contest was evidently not about the rules.

The judges, actor Reema Sen, and SS Music's Ramesh Babu and Bryan Peppin got to question the 10 finalists in the first round. Although the nonsensical questions - "Interpret the word `Okay'" - had potential for inane hilarity, the participants missed the opening every time. It was up to VJ Craig to save the day with unique introductions - "Her name does not make four! Presenting Tutu from Vizag." His good-natured ribbing also helped the contestants relax. One contestant went on about how language is never a barrier for him, as he can get the message across with his body language. At this point, Craig wanted to know how he'd express "Your sheep has run away with a wolf".

And then, the long-suffering Bryan decided to spice things up.

The participants were paired up and had to say why each of them would make a better VJ than their partner. Off came the gloves and out came the claws.

Tiring banter turned into a potential catfight until Craig wrested the microphone away.

The new VJs join the channel with immediate effect on contract.

The finals of VJ Factor 2 will be aired on SS Music on February 18 at noon, 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.
