Tuticorin: A synthetic turf tennis court was inaugurated by Superintendent of Police Deepak M. Damor at the Tuticorin Gymkhana Club on Sunday in the presence of chief guest, R. Muthu Manoharan, Vice-President, SPIC.
Speaking at the function, club president J.P. Joe Villavarayer said that Tuticorin was the only other place after Chennai in the State to have this modern facility. The twin court project was carried out on an outlay of Rs. 30 lakh with 500 square metres of play area.
Since floodlight facility was available, even major tournaments could be held here.
A boon to sportspersons, the courts could be used by local people, he said and praised the tennis secretary of the club T.M. Ramesh for extending his assistance in establishing the court.
A gallery for spectators to watch the matches would be established on the eastern side of the court, he said.
Besides two clay courts, the club also has shuttle court, table tennis court, ball badminton court and restaurant.
A swimming pool and skating rink are in the offing. The club, with 350 members, is affiliated to 40 clubs in the country.
