PATHANAMTHITTA: The Travancore Devaswom Board launched a major development project at Malikapuram Devi Temple complex in Sabarimala on Tuesday evening.

Board president G. Raman Nair laid the foundation stone for the project for constructing a Gopuram and Thidappally at the temple.

The project, estimated at Rs. 26 lakhs (Rs. 18 lakhs for the Gopuram and Rs. 8 lakhs for the Thidappally), will be completed before the next Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrim season, according to Devaswom Works Department sources.

Tantri Kantaru Mohanaru performed the Shilanyas as part of the stone-laying ceremony at Malikappuram.

The Board members M.B. Sreekumar and Punalur Madhu and Board Chief Engineer K. Ravikumar were present.

Pujas begin

The five-day temple rituals in the Malayalam month of Meenom began at the Lord Ayyappa temple with the auspicious Ganapati homam on Tuesday morning.

The Tantri led the Laksharchana held at Sannidhanam in the morning.

The Tantri, assisted by Melsanthi M. Sukumaran Namboodiri, also performed the sacred Sahasrakalasabhishekom at the Ayyappa temple prior to Utchapuja, later.

The Brahmakalasom was taken out in a procession, with the accompaniments of the sacred Marappani and other temple orchestra, to the sanctum sanctorum, earlier.

The Padipuja, Udayasthamanapuja and Pushpabhishekom were also performed.

The temple was opened at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday for the five-day monthly puja on Tuesday. Melshanti M. Sukumaran Namboodiri opened the sanctum sanctorum and Tantri Kantaru Mohanaru performed the kalasa puja in the evening.

The temple will be closed after the five-day monthly puja on Sunday afternoon.

Harivarasanam, 10 p.m.
