CHENNAI: Commodore Uday Narayanan Chitnavis assumed charge as the new Deputy Director-General of NCC (Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands) on Saturday. He succeeded Commodore P.P. Singh, who is superannuating on April 30.
After a brief handing over ceremony at the DDG headquarters here on Saturday, Commodore Chitnavis said all efforts would be made to ensure that members of the National Cadets Corps (NCC) participated in social welfare and awareness activities in some manner or the other. The Directorate was doing "extremely well" as compared to others, he said, and added that his predecessor had set very high standards to follow.
Commodore Chitnavis, an NDA graduate, was commissioned in 1973 and had held several prestigious appointments. He had commanded several naval ships and served as Director, Submarine Acquisition at the naval headquarters. Prior to his present assignment, he was Commander, Coast Guard Regional (East) controlling coastal areas from Haldia to Kanyakumari.
He had actively engaged himself in the tsunami relief operations in December 2004. Commodore Chitnavis was awarded Nau Sena Medal for devotion to duty during 1991.
