MDMK nominee claims credit for solving water problem
Pattukottai: S.Viswanathan, former Pattukottai Municipal chairman, of the MDMK will take on N.R.Rangarajan of the Congress candidate and the sitting MLA in the Assembly elections.
N. R. Rangarajan, a landlord, belongs to Thambikottai minor family and is the brother-in-law of former MP late V.N.Swainathan.
He has a "philanthrapist" image among a section of the people. Mr.Rangarajan banks on his traditional image, alliance strength and the caste quations.
According to him Vellalars are the deciding factor in the segment and majority of them are his supporters.
Moreover, he claims that he was instrumental in the construction of bed dams, laying of roads using NABARD fund and various small projects using MLA's local area development fund.
His rival Mr.S.Viswanathan says that he was with people all along his life.
During his tenure as Chairman of Pattukottai Municipality between 1986-1991, the acute drinking water problem in the town was solved by drilling borewells and constructing overhead tanks.
Roads were laid, he says. "A 230 kv sub-station was sanctioned for Pattukottai by the State Government. As the MLA Mr.Rangarajan had not followed it up it was taken to another place," alleges Mr.Viswanathan and described the performance of Mr.Rangarajan as "dismal" from 2001-2006. Mr.Viswanathan says that he will strive to construct dams to provide water to farmers for irrigation, establish an agro-based industry and establish a Regional Transport Office Unit at Pattukottai if elected.
Mr.Viswanathan's, wife Jayabharathi Viswanathan, who is the chairperson of Pattukottai Municipality, is also canvassing for him.
She highlights the works done by her in the area during the campaign.
There are 33 wards in Pattukottai Municipality. Besides the Municipal area, the constituency comprises Adhirampattinam special panchayat and Madukkur panchayat union.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalaithaa and MDMK General Secretary Vaiko have campaigned for Viswanathan at Pattukottai. DMK president M.Karunanidhi campaigned for Rangarajan at Thanjavur. Union Minister G.K.Vasan is to campaign for Rangarajan in May.
The population composition of the constituency is Mutharayars forming majority followed by Vellalars, Thevars, Kallars and Muslims.
The constituency has a total electorate of 1,75,518 out of whom 85,403 are male and 90,115 are female.
