860 of 3,725 nominations found invalid

CHENNAI: Out of a total of 3,725 nominations filed for the May 8 Assembly elections, papers submitted by 860 candidates were found invalid, State Election Department sources said on Saturday.

Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta told reporters here that the probe report on the complaint against Law Minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate for Royapuram D. Jayakumar with regard to Model Code violation had been submitted.

Code violation

Asked about the probe conducted as per the Election Commission's direction, he said though the report had been received, the Election Commission (EC) would take a final decision on the issue after examining a video footage submitted as evidence.

The enquiry was ordered following a complaint that Mr. Jayakumar had violated the model code of conduct by distributing sewing machines freely to some voters in his constituency.

The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam nominee for Andipatti constituency would be treated only as an Independent as he had failed to properly submit A and B forms at the time of filing nomination papers. According to information, the candidate had submitted only Xerox copies of these forms, Mr. Gupta said.
