Chennai-based Adyar Bakery has started White Town Cafe

PONDICHERRY: For those of you who like to take time off to chat with friends in a cool atmosphere sipping milk shakes and thick shakes and eating scoops of ice creams, White Town in Pondicherry has a new multicuisine vegetarian café.

Cool and laidback

Fully air-conditioned and located in the heart of the town, Chennai-based Adyar Bakery's White Town Cafe looks cozy and has a laidback atmosphere to it. The restaurant, which was opened on Friday, Tamil New Year's Day, is located at the end of Jawaharlal Nehru Street.

It serves north Indian dishes, including naans, rotis, parathas and Chinese delicacies along with a wide spread of ice creams and shakes.

The restaurant also has a bakery section with fresh cream cakes, puffs, macaroons, pizzas and cookies.

The restaurant, however, does not have the regular south Indian dishes such as idly, dosa, vada and pongal.

"Though we have a big factory in Chennai for our 20 branches there, we have our own factory in Pondicherry for the baked items," said S. Ravekumar, Head, Sales and Marketing.

Tastefully decorated

The restaurant, which can seat 40 persons at a time, has been tastefully decorated in orange, green and brown. The restaurant has a heritage look, with high ceilings and wooden rafters running across. The lights and fans too add to the old world charm.

"This is our second outlet in Pondicherry, the first being on Mission Street. We also have a counter at Food World. We want to attract both a mix of tourists and locals and give them a place them sit, relax and talk," said Mansoor Hussain, Head, Commercial and Projects.

Shunmugam, Manager, Personal and Administration, said Adyar Bakery, which was started in 1952 by G. Ranganathan, has over 20 branches in Chennai and corporate outlets at Infosys, L&T Infotech and HCL BPO. "We have our own brand of icecreams in the name of Shakes and Creams, multicuisine food under the name Jade Garden, which has Indian, Chinese and Tandoor items, and other foods such as pizzas and burgers," said directors R. Ramesh and R. Mukund.
