KRISHNAGIRI: Indiscriminate dumping of medical waste in private land is creating serious health hazard in Veppanahalli, says local residents.
An open plot on the Veppanahalli-Theertham main road has been turned into a dump yard with garbage, including medical waste and polythene bags, dropped by the local commercial establishments.
The open plot is situated next to a medical shop and a clinic and is very near a bus stand.
Veppanahalli Block Development Officer (village panchayat) T.S. Vijaykumar told ‘The Hindu’ that the garbage was cleared two months ago on the directions of the Collector, V.K. Shanmugam. Even after that the public had not stopped dumping garbage in the plot.
It was cleared one month ago. Creating awareness was the need of hour. The administration is planning to carry out an awareness campaign to protect the environment, Mr. Vijaykumar said.
He also said that as many as 13 garbage bins were kept in the town, which was insufficient to cope with the growing population of the town.
Local people said fencing the plot and putting a notice board asking shop owners not to dump garbage will pave way for a clean environment.
