K.R. Ramasamy bags Thiruvadanai seat for the fifth consecutive time His father Karia Manickam Ambalam also held the seat four times, though not consecutively, from 1957.
Ramanathapuram: The Congress candidate for Thiruvadanai constituency K.R. Ramasamy has created an impressive record by winning the Assembly seat for the fifth consecutive time.
He has achieved the distinction of the first person to become an MLA for the fifth consecutive time in the entire southern districts.
Though the latest win was possible after a tough fight from the AIADMK candidate C. Animuthu, he has proved that he is one of the `unassailable' politicians in Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Ramasamy defeated his nearest rival Mr. Animuthu by a victory margin of 5,253 votes with the support of the DMK. When the votes polled in the Thiruvadanai constituency were counted Mr. Ramasamy established a clear lead in the beginning.
But, in the later rounds, the margin was seen reducing to a great extent.
It gave tense moments at the counting centre. However, the result was same as in 2001 elections.
Mr. Ramasamy, who is known as an upright politician, emerged victorious in the keenly contested elections in 2001. He tasted success by defeating Jones Russo, wife of slain DMK leader Russo, with a margin of just 2,304 votes in alliance with AIADMK.
The Congress veteran was the winner in the elections held in 1996 and 1989 too.
With the help of the DMK, he established a lead of over 30,000 votes against the JD candidate K. Sornalingam in 1996.
His victory in the 1989 elections when the Congress contested the elections on its own proved that he has considerable clout among the electorate.
The interesting point is that Mr. Ramasamy's father Karia Manickam Ambalam also held the seat four times, though not consecutively, from 1957.
He was the winner in the elections held in 1957, 1962, 1967 and 1977.
Though he contested the elections held in 1971, P.R. Shanmugham of the DMK defeated him.
Another piece of information is that out of 13 elections held for the Thiruvadanai constituency since 1951, Mr. Ramasamy's family won the seat 9 times.
Straightforwardness, caste influence, alliance strength, family image and other factors are considered as Ramasamy's asset for the consecutive victories.
If he solves the problems including water scarcity in some areas in the constituency, he will be unassailable in the future elections also.
