Thanjavur: Music Festival 2006, organised by the Sri Thyagabrahma Sabha at Thanjavur, began with an excellent Carnatic music performance by film fame Mahathi and party on Saturday.
Accompanied by V.V. Ravi on violin, M.S. Varadhan on Mrithangam and Nergunam Sankar on Kanjira, Mahathi simply enthralled the audience with her captivating voice.
Her selection of kritis, that are not popular, but need experienced rendering and delivering them with mastery of a senior artiste made the audience wonder at her talent.
The numbers included "Namani Vigna Vinayaka Nadasi Krishna Paripalaya", Kriti of Seshaiyer in Hamsadvani Raga set to Adhi thalam, "Mehru Samana", Thyagaraja Kriti in Mayamalava Gowda Raga set to Adhi thalam, "Nan Enna Thavam Seideno" of Otthukadu Venkatasubbaiyer, "Kripanithe" of Muthaiyah Bhagavathar, "Akshaya Linga Vibo" of Muthuswamy Dikshithar.
She did splendidly while singing "Kanakana Sanamula Kalamuna Sobilu" in the Kriti "Mehru Samana" and "Kripanithe."
Earlier, R. Vaidhyanathan, Chief Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, Thanjavur, inaugurated the festival.
Tamil Scholar Dr. T.N. Ramachandran was honoured on the occasion.
According to Dr. S. Thiagaraja Sharma, president of the sabha and K. Padmanabhan, secretary, the sabha was established way back in 1942 with a view to patronise and popularise Carnatic music. Since then the sabha has been organising music festivals.
This year programmes include Thamizhisai, Harikatha and Hindustani programmes.
Important programmes include Ghazal by Vinod Kumar on Monday (June 19), Saxaphone duet by M.S. Lavanya and M.S. Subbulakshmi on Tuesday (June 20), Devaram by Kudanthai Lakshmanan and Divya Prabantham by T.V. Sundaravalli on Wednesday (June 21), Namasankeerthanam by Udayalur K. Kalyanarama Bhagavathar on Thursday (June 22), Carnatic vocal by Sriram Gangadharan on Friday (June 23), which happens to be the memorial day of Sangeetha Vidwan Maharajapuram Santhanam, and Musical discourse by Dr. Pramila Gurumurthy on Saturday (June 24).
S.S. Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, will participate in the valedictory function on Sunday, June 25.
