CHENNAI: Here is a guide for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers.

The Wildlife wing of the State Forest Department has brought out a publication `Wild Biodiversity of Tamil Nadu' which has information about various national parks, wildlife and bird sanctuaries in the State.

Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary, Gruzzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary, Srivilliputhur, Indira Gandhi National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, Pollachi, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park and Mukurthi National Park, The Nilgiris, Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park and Biosphere Reserve, Ramanathapuram, Guindy National Park, Chennai, are some of the famous spots featured in the book.

Information on access to the sanctuary/national park, location, forest type, flora, fauna, endemic and non-endemic species, reptiles have been clearly explained in the book. Besides tourism information such as forest rest houses, the best season to visit the place and contact numbers of the officials concerned are also provided.

The guide also gives some tips for tourists. There is also an appeal to visitors not to touch any animal. In any national park or a sanctuary maintaining silence is the most important thing. Equally important is non-littering of the forest area. Before starting for the forest area the visitors should know the weather conditions prevailing in the place that they intend to visit. Do not collect any specimen of flora without permission.

The book has a few handy tips for those who encounter a lonely tusker.

The general advice is to keep your sense alert for hearing birdcalls or the alarm calls of deer or langur.

C.K. Sreedharan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, said the work on preparing the book began a couple of months ago and it was completed within a short period of time.

Soon it would be made available at the Wildlife Warden's Office at DMS Complex, Anna Salai, Teynampet. For details contact: 044-24321471.
