House in posh CIT colony targeted while residents are away
CHENNAI: Burglars struck at a house in the posh CIT Colony here on Saturday night and stolen over 200 sovereigns of gold and diamonds valued around Rs. 18 lakh.
Police identified the house on the First Link Road, CIT Colony, Mylapore as that of M. Thirunavukkarasu, a building contractor.
The break-in took place when the family went out around 3 p.m.
When they returned home around 9.30 p.m. they were shocked to find the front door locked from inside. Rushing to the rear, they found the locks broken open.
Police suspect that the burglars, after locking the front door from inside on the ground floor, took away gold jewels, diamonds, and Rs. 25,000 in cash. Some five to six almirahs in three rooms were broken open, police said.
Joint Commissioner of Police Dorairaj, Mylapore DCP A. G. Mourya and a team of police visited the scene of crime.
Fingerprints have been lifted from the scene, and a sniffer dog called in by police went 500 metres on the main road and stopped near a major retail outlet. Mylapore police have registered a case and are investigating.
"Though we don't suspect any one , somebody might have noticed us leaving'', a family member said.
Two special teams have been formed to nab the culprits, a senior officer said.
