Swift action by police officer
On the evening of July 18 at about 8 p.m., I reached home on my two-wheeler after avoiding a major collision with an auto at the Round Tana behind Valluvarkottam. I immediately called the Joint Commissioner of Police Traffic, Mr. Sunil Kumar, IPS, and apprised him of the seriousness of the traffic hazard at that junction. He responded by asking me when I was likely pass the spot again and I told him it would be the next day in the morning. He asked me to give him a day and then talk to him. I failed to understand at that point the meaning of his request.
It was a pleasant surprise next day to see that the traffic flow in that junction streamlined at by 10 a.m. and I understood then that though the JC wanted a day to set right things, he had done it overnight.
While all the vehicle users will be thankful for the action done, I was really impressed by his immediate response and immediate action and I lost no time in sharing my feeling of gratitude towards the officer with the residents in my colony.
Train halt at Perambur
All the trains except the Mysore-Shatbadi Express Train stop at Perambur on the way to Chennai for the benefit of north Chennai passengers. The newly introduced 2696 Trivandrum-Chennai super fast express and 2686 Mangalore-Chennai super fast express however do not halt at Perambur. The passengers have no choice but to disembark with their heavy luggage at Chennai Central.
We request the Southern Railway administration to provide a halt for the above-mentioned trains at Perambur.
TV Channel for railways
The Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad's announcement on the launching of a TV Channel exclusively for Railways is most welcome.
This will be a boon to the thousands of travelling public and railway men as the channel will provide day to day information pertaining to reservation, train timings, development activities etc., of the sixteen zonal railways criss-crossing the country. It is fitting that the Indian Railways, the backbone of the nation, with the distinction of being the second largest in the world, boasting of a 150 year history possessing 63,500 of track and carrying 15 million passengers a day, now has an exclusive channel to cover it.
Create a hygienic Chennai
The Local Administration Minister has taken up efforts to spruce up various parks in the city to usher in `Singara Chennai'.
But Mambalam Canal, which runs around West C.I.T. Nagar, is full of filth and a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The life of the people around the canal is miserable. Some have developed respiratory problems and rashes over the body due to mosquito bites. I request the Minister to order an inspection of the area, clean the canal and eradicate the mosquito nuisance, so that the Minister's concept of a Singara Chennai ties in with a `Sugadhara' Chennai.

Install a transformer
The low voltage problem in Chitlapakkam in general and in Muthulakshmi Nagar in particular has been prevailing for more than five months now. A few months ago we observed tripping of A/c units, fridge and non-working of tube lights in our colony; this low voltage problem was highlighted in the grievance day meeting held in the Tambaram Division EB Office. We have been requesting a separate transformer near Saradambal Street Extension for quite some time but without any result. I request the Nehru Nagar EB authorities to kindly solve the low voltage problem in our area at the earliest by erecting a transformer.

Power cut problem solved
This mail is a follow up of my earlier one regarding frequent power cuts. After my mail to you, the Assistant Engineer concerned, Mr. Murali of Santhome, called me up and elaborated all the actions taken so far at N.M.K. Street. Now the power-tripping problem as well as the frequent power cuts have been sorted out. My heartful thanks to The Hindu for taking sincere effort for individual like me. And Mr. Murali, despite his hectic schedule, personally called me and explained everything. I am really grateful to him.
Improve bus services
There is no adequate bus service during morning rush hour from Kamarajapuram bus stand to Tambaram railway station. At 8-30 a.m. buses passing through Kamarajapuram are jampacked; despite the schoolchildren and public waiting at the bus stand, the buses skip the bus stand and stop100 metres away. Schoolchildren and elderly citizens have to run behind the bus despite the heavy traffic to reach their destination. This is a regular phenomenon. Earlier, there was a cut service from Kamarajapuram to Parrys, but was withdrawn for reasons not known. Will the MTC authorities kindly look into this and resume the cut service from Kamarajapuram to Tambaram railway station immediately for the benefit of the public?
Fine gesture by bus conductor
I boarded an MTC bus on route No. M18C, (ALG 857) plying between T.Nagar and Kilkattalai, from T.Nagar bus terminus at 8 p.m. on July 2, 2006 and purchased a ticket for Rs. 5/- to Madipakkam Koot Road by tendering Rs. 100/-. The conductor issued the ticket and said that he would return the balance amount later. He did not give me anything in writing nor did pester him for the balance. However, when the bus left the Guindy bus stop, the conductor personally came to my seat, located behind the driver, and returned the balance amount after confirmation, despite the crowd.
I congratulate the conductor for his fine gesture and request the MTC authorities to motivate such crew by recognising their service to the public.

Give vacant land to Railways
Now that a new spacious prison has come up at Puzhal, the old prison can be handed over to the railways who need to provide more amenities at Park station as also work on schemes connecting Egmore and Central.

M.O. service charges
Even during British rule, the postal department was treated as a service-oriented department to the public. Now, the Finance Ministry has started to collect service charges @12.5% for money orders. Everybody knows that those who are sending money orders are mostly very poor and are remitting money to their aged parents in their native villages. This kind of anti-people tax must be scrapped.
Shift bus stop
The new MTC bus stop in Ayanavaram railway quarters is a nightmare for commuters and vehicle users at the Junction of Konnur High Road and P.E. Koil West Mada Street.
I request the MTC authorities to shift the bus stop to a spacious site available on the eastern side opposite door No. 204 or 205 in Konnur High Road of Ayanavaram, as suggested earlier by the Chennai City Traffic Police. This will help commuters and pedestrians besides relieving traffic snarls.

Pay Commission arrears
Government servants who have retired from service in 1996 have not yet received Pay Commission arrears till July 2006.
According to G.O. Ms. No. 412 and 413 dated 31 July, 2004 finance department of the Government may release the arrears of gratuity and pay revision arrears to the pensioners in three instalments. The Government should settle the arrears in cash.
Press double-deckers into service
During the peak hours, both in the mornings and evenings, MTC should think of pressing into service double-decker buses. `Express' buses and `ladies special' buses can be dispensed with during peak hours, as most of them ply with less number of commuters. In Mumbai, we find double-decker buses plying not only during peak hours but also during lean hours too. Chennai should go the Mumbai way when it comes to providing bus service. The MTC authorities should do the needful in this regard.
Strengthen bridge parapet walls
Many years ago a RTC bus fell of a bridge on rainy night crashing through the parapet wall of the bridge and the bus with its passengers was washed away. In another incident, a couple on a bike fell (off the mini fly-over) on a car and were injured. Now, a police van has plunged into a gorge of 20 metres. When lakhs of rupees are spent on bridges it is a pity that a chunk of it is not earmarked for construction of sturdy retention walls or grills. Perhaps it is presumed once in a while accidents will happen. It is a wrong notion. Instead of taking post-remedial measures it is essential to build pucca parapet/ retention walls on all the bridges. The flimsy walls on the road over bridges on flyovers and bridges such as Anna flyovers mini flyovers, and Irumbuliyur bridge need attention.
Prolonged road works
In Tambaram, the Mudichur Road, a state highway, connects local areas such as Krishna Nagar, Old Perungalathur, Mudichur, Mannivakkam to Tambaram. This 6 k.m. stretch highway through which state buses bound for Kanchipuram, Padappai, Manimangalam, Vallakottai, Sriperumbudur ply, was severely damaged during the heavy and unprecedented rain and floods during October 2005. Repairs to this damaged road and widening work started very slowly during January 2006, but were stopped due to General Elections in May 2006. Even after 2 months from the date of completion of elections, there is no sign of completing the work. J
To add fuel to the fire, two small culverts were dug and abandoned half-way near Bharathi Nagar. Another culvert is being constructed near Ethirajapuram for the past 2 months by diverting the traffic through lanes and streets. I am sure this culvert construction work needs only a week or a fortnight but it has been prolonged for months together much to the inconvenience of the office-goers, two-wheeler riders, students and women. Hundreds of commuters face a daily ordeal because of the poor road, curtailment of bus services and traffic diversion.

The leakage in the water main at Melpatti Ponnappa Street has been attended to and there is no leakage of water at present in that street.
