Following Chief Minister's announcement in Chennai
MADURAI: Madurai Kamaraj University is gearing for `education research activities' following Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's announcement on Saturday that the university will become the core centre for larger focus on education.
The Chief Minister made the announcement in Chennai while speaking at the 104th birth anniversary celebrations of late Kamaraj, in response to an appeal from Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.
Welcoming the Chief Minister's decision and awaiting further details from the Government, the university authorities here said that emphasis on research in education was a fitting tribute to Kamaraj whose concern was always about the rural poor and their welfare.
Vice-Chancellor P. Maruthamuthu, told The Hindu on Sunday that he would form at once an internal committee drawing experts and faculty to make the preparations for implementing the State Government directions.
He said the Department of Education in the university would be activated fully so as to give shape to "the idea of the Chief Minister and Finance Minister."
According to Dr. Maruthamuthu, the decision of having core research in education from Madurai would enable reaching out to the rural students and look in to the socio-economic issues that pose influence on education.
Enrolment coming down
Speaking on behalf of the affiliated colleges of the university, G. Thiruvasagam, general secretary of MKU College Principals' Association and Member-Syndicate, said it was important to note that higher education enrolment was coming down owing to various factors and only core research in education would help in identifying/solving the issues.
"Education for all was an issue close to Kamaraj's heart and he had concern for rural masses and their success in life. When we have a clear focus, the reasons for dropouts can be established", Dr.Thiruvasagam said.
A special Syndicate meeting of the university, convened here recently, thanked the Chief Minister for his announcement on making the university an education research centre.
The members hailed the announcement as an honour for the institution. Dr. Maruthamuthu, moved a resolution to this effect.
