CHENGAM: Welfare Association for the Rural Mass (WARM), a non-governmental organisation at Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district, handed over a loan amount of Rs.17 lakh to members of 34 self-help groups (SHGs) at a function here on Saturday.

Chengam Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) S. Vinayagam handed over the amount in the presence of WARM honorary secretary K. Rajavelu.

Mr.Vinayagam said that 50 years ago, economic status of women was poor, particularly in villages. They were always looked down upon. However, the situation is different at present.

Women of the present day, including those residing in rural areas, had learnt to be financially self-dependent. Various NGOs including WARM worked towards women empowerment.

In the past, women lacked awareness of the outside world. But, this situation had also changed. The loan extended by government and NGOs to women members of SHGs should be used for self-development, Mr.Vinayagam said.
