CHENNAI: Wind power generation has, suddenly, picked up in the last three-four days, providing some respite to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) that has been purchasing power on a temporary basis at high cost.

On the corresponding days in the previous year, the quantum of wind power produced did not exceed one million units.

More or less, this was the position in the first week of this month too.

On April 9, the wind power generation accounted for about 3 MU and the next day, 4.8 MU.

For meeting the present demand, the Board is purchasing power from different sources such as the power exchange and a number of utilities of other States including Chattisgarh, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. In some cases, the cost of power is as high as Rs.13 per unit, a senior TNEB official says.
