MADURAI: The city police have registered a case of attempt to murder and dowry harassment against seven persons, including All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP S.S. Chandran.
A police team that went to the MP's residence at Saligramam in Chennai on Friday said Mr. Chandran was "not available" and took his brother's son, D. Dhanasekharan (34), into custody.
In a complaint lodged with an All-Women Police Station here, S. Latha alias Latha Natchiar (22), (wife of D. Dhanasekharan), alleged that her husband and in-laws harassed her since her marriage in 2002 for dowry.
They threatened to kill her and refused to return her cash and jewellery.
Unable to bear the torment, Ms. Latha preferred a complaint, police sources said. A case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 420 (cheating), 498 (A) (harassment of a woman by her husband) and Section 3 and 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act was registered against the MP, his brother, R.M.N.S. Dhanabalan (60) and five others.
