COIMBATORE: A new day care centre for autistic children will be opened in Coimbatore on August 27. An autism counselling camp will also be held on the same day at Avarampalayam.
The camp will offer a platform for parents of autistic children to interact with experts and also among themselves. "There are still many misconceptions about autism. Through counselling, many of them can be corrected," said Geeta Raja, the founder of the institution.
The day care centre would have occupational, speech and clinical therapists for developing the motor functions and speech skills of the children. "For parents who have tight working schedules, looking after an autistic child may be difficult. Such a day care centre would be an emotional support for them," Ms.Geeta said.
Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder and mildly autistic children could even go to school. Such children may have certain skills, which normal children did not have and they could even excel in those skills. It was up to the parents to seek professional help to assess the strength of their child at the right time and help tap the child's potential, she said.
Nearly a decade ago, many parents were ignorant of the condition and did not know where they should take their child for treatment. But, the situation had improved now and people were becoming aware of autism.
"Some parents are not willing to accept that their child has special needs. They should understand that their children can be managed with early detection and the right kind of training," Ms. Geeta said.
The day care centre would be for children up to ten years.
Starting vocational training centre for children over 15 years was their long-term plan, she said. The school would also have play therapy, sand therapy, music therapy and yoga.
