A fine arts competition was held at Nadar Saraswathi College of Arts and Science in Theni recently. S. Anandhi Prabha was declared the overall champion.
P. Mareeswari, who stood first in many competitions, was adjudged Miss Fine Arts. Rose wing led by Sakhi lifted the rolling trophy as their team performed exceedingly well in most of the competitions.
While distributing prizes to the winners, the Superintendent of Police, Najmul Hoda, said women were mentally stronger than men.
The college also celebrated its 60th Independence Day celebrations on the college premises on Tuesday.
Presiding over the function, the Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, said students should act as ambassadors in propagating total sanitation and ill effects of AIDS/HIV.
He also insisted on blood test by both bride and bridegroom before marriage for their safety. Earlier, students took out a rally that started from N.S. Boys Higher Secondary School and reached Theni Melapettai Hindu Nadar Uravinmurai Girls Higher Secondary School in the town after passing through prime roads.
The Collector inaugurated the rally.
A disaster management mock drill was conducted in V.P.M.M. Educational institution, Krishnankoil in Virudhunagar district, by the district fire and rescue services department on August 10.
Educational administrator of V.P.M.M trusts V.P.M. Shankar presided over the function. A demonstration on how to rescue during times of natural disaster was also conducted by the fire service personnel.
A training programme on mushroom cultivation was conducted in Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi, by its Department of Biotechnology on August 10. The programme benefited the members of self-help groups `Amirthanandhalashmi Vidivelli and Annai Therasa Group' of Anaikuttam.
The programme was inaugurated by S. Sathya, Secretary, Mother Terasa Self Help Group. K. Rajakumar, Principal, presided over the function.

A programme on `Entrepreneurship awareness' was conducted for the final year Electronics and Communicating Engineering students of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi, by the entrepreneurship lab of the Department of Management on August 5. S. Balakrishnan, Principal, inaugurated the event, while M. Jeyakumar, TACED, spoke on opportunities available for an entrepreneur. V. Vijayarangan, Head, ECE, National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, shared his professionals experiences.
A University Grants Commission-sponsored two-day symposium on `Recent trends in computer vision and image processing' was conducted in SFR College for Women, Sivakasi, by its Department of Computer Science on August 10 and 11.
D. Balasubramanian, Vice Principal, Arasan Ganesan Polytechnic, Sivakasi, spoke on `Recent trends in C Vision' while the dean on Bharathidasan Institute of Technology, Bharathidasan Institute, Tiruchi, R. Krishnamoorthy, spoke about `Image compression.'
Staff members from all colleges all over Tamil Nadu presented papers in the field of `Image processing.' D. Murali, Head, Department of Computer Science, PSG arts College, spoke on `Temporal parallelism' while a lecture on `Content-based retrieval' was delivered by K. Muneeswaran, Head, CSE, Department of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi.
