That the Gandhian organisations of the city do not have an auditorium to seat about 1000 people was felt at the centenary celebration of `Madurai Gandhi' N.M.R. Subbaraman on Monday.

Industrialist N. Mahalingam was quick to point this out and offered to donate Rs.5 lakh for the construction of an auditorium on the premises of Gandhi Museum.

The Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, G.K. Vasan, promised to provide Rs.5 lakh from the local area development fund.

The centenary celebration itself was conducted under a colourful `pandal' erected for an official function organised the previous day in which the Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for the second drinking water pipeline project for the city.
